Geddy Lee speaks out in support of Pussy Riot
Pussy Riot is the Russian feminist punk-rock band that recently made headlines when they were jailed for a performance
inside a Moscow cathedral for criticizing President Vladimir
Putin and the Russian Orthodox Church. The band's arrest and subsequent
trial have inspired a wave of protests across Europe and North America,

Dave Bidini Remembers Summer '75's "Fly By Night"
In an editorial published in last week's National Post, "Songs of the summer: No season evokes more musical memories than the hottest one",writer/musician Dave Bidini remembers a few songs that evoke summer, starting with "Fly By Night":
My family had a boat, a cruiser, which we docked in Atherly, Ont., just outside of Orillia. The thing I liked most about going there in the summertime was laying across the bow while anchored in the middle of Lake Couchiching, my radio/cassette player at my elbow. I’d listen to a few songs — hoping for Ringo’s No No Song or Pick Up the Pieces by the Average White Band — until something came on that I didn’t like, at which point I’d hop in the water, swim a little, then climb back to the bow.- Thansk to RushFanForever for the headsup!
That year, there was hardly any rock music on the radio — it was mostly Barry Manilow and How Long by Ace and Have You Never Been Mellow by Olivia Newton-John; even the hit version of Pinball Wizard was done by Elton John — so hearing anything on AM radio with a guitar was a big deal. Most rock music had migrated to FM radio, and my summer radio didn’t get that.
In context, Fly By Night was to 1975’s summer playlist what grindcore is to acoustic folk. Its opening chords sounded mean and nasty, even though, hearing them now, the guitar is more lightly flanged than fuzztoned, although I wouldn’t have known the difference at the time. There was also something about the chorus, full of punches and accents in strange places at a time when a lot of pop songs just kind of loped along stepping easily from place to place. Throughout the song, the sun climbed and the day grew hot, but I remember not swimming the rest of the afternoon, instead laying there sunburnt and wanting to hear Fly By Night again, wondering if what I’d heard the first time was, in fact, real.

Rush Feature in Stereophile September
The September issue of Stereophile just hit newsstands last week, and is now available for your reading pleasure. In "Working Men: Rush Celebrate More Than Four Decades of By-Tor, Geddy Lee's Voice, and the World's Biggest Drum Kit",
Alex discusses the new album and more importantly the mastering. In
addition, he revisits the horrible mastering of Vapor Trails: "...it is a
war. Vapor Trails [2002], for example, was mastered so hot, it really
wrecked the album. I can't listen to that record. It's so flat and has
so much distortion that we really want to remix that record. It was out
of our hands when it was mastered, and the mastering engineer did a poor
job. He's the first one to admit it. He really pushed it."

Now it has become a selling point for an unusual bond offering being marketed to institutional investors and wealthy individuals. A privately held Nashville, Tenn., company is preparing a $300 million bond backed by the cut it receives as a middleman between music companies and songwriters and the outlets that broadcast their music. Plates of prog rock: An epic nine-course meal inspired by Rush - National Post
As announced back in June, this weekend saw the "Rush As Food" benefit dinner in Toronto. The dinner consisted of nine courses representing different Rush songs. For the full story visit the National Post.com:
The 16 diners at the $150-a-plate, three-hour-plus “Rush as Food” meal (proceeds of which went to the Art Gives Hope charity founded by the band’s late photographer Andrew McNaughtan) ranged from foodies who had never seen the band play live to rabid fans discussing their favourite live Lifeson guitar solos and the merits of new album Clockwork Angels. All were frequently smiling, and not just because of the copious glasses of Entre Nous (an agreeably fruity Pinot Noir by Crowley Wines in Oregon, named after a song on Rush’s 1980 album, Permanent Waves).

"Rush Tells A Different Story" - Times of Oman
The Times of Oman have published a new interview with Alex Lifeson titled "Rush Tells A Different Story", where he talks about the recording of Clockwork Angels, including the history of songs such as Wish Them Well which went three iterations before they were happy:
"We just were not happy at all with the first two, and it's come so far from what those ideas were. The first one was a meandering kind of rhythmic thing, a little on the sweet side and boring as hell. The second one was a little grittier, and then we kind of reassessed what the song was about and tried to be more positive with the sentiment musically."He also talks about the radio edit of "Headlong Flight":
"Our expectation was that they probably wouldn't play it, and there was pressure to do a radio-edit version which came down to about five-and-a-half minutes - and yet it's gotten lots of play and is generating attention for the album. So we get by without radio, really, although it's wonderful to have the support if you can get it."And in regards to bringing an orchestra on the road:
"It's just something else that's different for us, and I can't wait to hear what it sounds like. It's new staging, new lighting, everything is new and fresh about it. I would say that it's an evolutionary extension of what the Time Machine tour was, but we are definitely freshening it up and there'll be a lot of new video stuff going on.

Brian Gardner on mastering the new Rush ‘Clockwork Angels’ album - Audio-Times.com
Audio-Times.com has posted a new interview with mastering engineer Brian Gardner where he discusses Clockwork Angels.
"Technically Nick Raskulenicz [producer on Clockwork Angels] had it together as always and made my work so much easier. Artistically with Clockwork Angels, there seemed to be a turn towards more presence and I noticed an artistic shift in the overall vibe, that being it was more an atmospheric feel being blended in, so any altering of EQ had to be done carefully but regardless the Brilliance of Rush would prevail.
"...With Clockwork Angels, there was a definite turn towards more presence but again everything was pretty much set sonically and any altering of EQ had to be done carefully. Geddy definitely had say in some instances where a clarification of a vocal line or a bass line as did Alex in certain guitar sections. Neil slipped me a $20 to make sure the drums predominated….kidding!"For the full interview click here. - Thanks to Ed at RushIsABand for the headsup!

The Favourite Albums Of Rush's Geddy Lee - The Quietus
The Quietus has posted an extensive new feature where Geddy Lee discusses his 13 favorite albums.
"Mick Middles speaks to Rush bassist and singer Geddy Lee about his favourite albums of all times... Geddy Lee's Baker's Dozen is intriguing rather than surprising. Of course, the inclusion of adventuresome power trios like Cream and the Jimi Hendrix Experience might seem obvious and strongly reflect the blues rock of their formative years. Nevertheless, it seems a long road from there to Radiohead and Bjork."- Thanks to Ed at RushIsABand for the headsup!
