Rush Feature In The March Issue of UK's "Metal Hammer"

Preparing for the upcoming Rush UK tour, the March issue of Metal Hammer magazine includes a new interview with Geddy Lee titled "Rush And The Weird Rise Of Prog Metal". The article covers the history of Rush from 1968 through present day, and also includes Geddy's comments regarding next years 40th anniversary:
"I don't think about things like the 40th anniversary. We have no plans to celebrate it. We did enough for the 30th. So, if anything is being planned, it will be without our involvement. We are still looking forward, not back."
- Thanks to John Patuto for the headsup and the transcript!

Rush Feature In March 28th RollingStone

There is a new Rush feature in the new March 28th issue of RollingStone magazine:
"Rush's Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee might loathe disco and know almost nothing about rap, but the prog giants are being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next month...Lee and Lifeson stopped by RS, - and we played them a song by each of their fellow inductees."
The article includes their responses to each of the songs played from their fellow artists. You can read the full article here- Thanks to RushFanForever for the headsup and providing the original article!

Anthrax's "Anthems" Now Available

UPDATE 3/19: In a new interview with radio.com, Anthrax's Scott Ian commented on Rush and the Rock Hall of Fame (thanks Bman for the headsup!):
"I'm certainly a Rush fan but [Drummer] Charlie [Benante] and [bassist] Frankie [Bello] and Joey are like, Rush nerds.  They know every single thing about Rush...People take Rush seriously, they’re not everyone’s cup of tea, but everyone has a respect for that band whether you like them or not." - Radio.com, March 19, 2013
Anthrax's new EP Anthems, hits the store shelves today, March 19th.   The tracklist includes Anthem (RUSH); Jailbreak (THIN LIZZY); TNT (AC/DC); Big Eyes (CHEAP TRICK); Smokin' (BOSTON); Keep On Runnin' (JOURNEY).  Click here to order the CD now; click here to buy it on iTunes.
"When I was first learning to play drums, I would strap on my headphones, play along with [All the World's a Stage] and be transformedI remember talking with Cliff [Burton] and Kirk [Hammett of Metallica] back when we first met, and we all agreed how much of an influence Rush was on all of us. I don't [know] if you would hear anything that sounds like Rush in Anthrax's music, but the passion, the drive, the musicianship and the appreciation is all there." - Charlie Benante, Rollingstone.com, January 18, 2012
"It was a lot of fun, especially because a lot of those (songs) aren't, I guess, normal for us or like so much of our repertoire - although they are because they're songs we all knew. Maybe on paper the idea of us doing something like that seems weird, until you hear them and then it makes sense." - Scott Ian, Billboard.com, January 4, 2012
It was first reported that Anthrax was working on a Rush cover back in April of last year, when a video was posted of drummer Charlie Benante laying down his drum track. Further news broke in August of the covers EP including a video interview with the Artistan News service where guitarist Scott Ian confirmed:
"The RUSH song is a bit of a bitch; I can't say that's an easy one. But it's a song we all know and we're all familiar with, so then, of course, you take on the challenge of just really trying to nail it and do it justice."

The Q's Canadian 70s rock anthem winner announced

"Inspired by the passionate fight going on in Massachusetts right now over which song will become its official state rock song. We decided to launch our own Q contest to find Canada's official 70s rock anthem and you sent us a deluge of nominations.

"The Q team powered through the flood of entries and after some passionate deliberations a winner was chosen... RUSH. 'Closer to the Heart'." - CBC.ca, March 15, 2013

Rush to play Festival d’ete, Quebec City, July 10th

Quebec City, March 15, 2013 – With a new critically-acclaimed album out, Rush is bringing their epic Clockwork Angels Tour to the Festival on July 10. They’ll be playing the Bell Stage on the Plains of Abraham in what will be their only show in Québec. And what a show ─ this will be a huge production with projections, special effects and even the Clockwork Angels String Ensemble to add a complex layer of sound to both their new work and their rich repertoire.

Remembering the enthusiastic Festival crowds in 2010, Geddy Lee, Neil Peart and Alex Lifeson are excited to be back. “We know that Rush will blow our many rock fans away. And because this is their only stop in the province, we expect people to be coming in from all over to see these three world-famous rock stars who are still going strong after almost 40 years”, program director Louis Bellavance was proud to say.

Band of the Year and Album of the Year winners at the 2012 Classic Rock Awards in London, Rush will soon be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

75,000 passes for the Festival d’été de Québec will go on sale Saturday, March 16 at infofestival.com.

El Doom's Cheeky Rush Tribute

"El Doom And The Born Electric will be offering an exclusive tour shirt on their UK trek with Kvelertak starting this week.  The Norwegians’ cheeky merch item is their take on Rush’s iconic ‘Starman’ logo – but frontman El Doom insists it’s all just a coincidence.  He explains: 'I wanted to make a special shirt for this tour of the UK, and one day in my studio I somehow found myself standing in this strange but familiar position.  And what do you know? Suddenly it somehow looked like this. Don’t tell Geddy…'" - ProgRockMag.com, March 4, 2012

Conan O'Brien Mentions Rush During His Monologue

During last night's monologue on The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien, when discussing how the Cardinals in Rome have begun the process of choosing a new Pope, Conan says:
"The top choice for the new Pope could be a Canadian. Isn't that amazing? If elected Pope his first act would be to grant sainthood to Wayne Gretsky, Celine Dion and Geddy Lee from Rush!"
He then goes on to point out a few folks in the audience who cheered his joke, remarking that they were a little Rush section over there, and saying that he just outed them as Rush fans. You can watch the monologue here. - Thanks to RushIsABand for the headsup!

Rush Mention In "Treasure Detectives" Preview Feature

Yesterday Yahoo! News published a teaser story and slideshow for the series premiere of CNBC's Treasure Detectives, which premiered last night, March 5th, at 9:00pm ET.  In a case of life imitating art, the online story tells of the discovery of a rare original Ferrari 166 Mille Miglia, the car featured in the song "Red Barchetta", that had been "preserved for for fifty-odd years":
"This 1950 Ferrari 166 Mille Miglia was not really lost, but it was out of the public eye for nearly half a century (much like the car stashed in a barn in the 1981 song "Red Barchetta" by Rush). This rare intact example of the original Ferrari racing car (only 166 were made, per the name) went from disuse to the cover of the September/October 2006 issue of Cavallino Magazine and then was shown at the 2007 Cavallino Classic in Palm Beach, Fla."
I do need to correct the author of the above, it is not true that "only 166 were made, per the name".  In fact, only thirty-eight of these hand built masterpieces were produced, from 1947 to 1953. The first "sports car" (as opposed to a race car) ever shown on a Ferrari chassis, the 166 got its name from the 166 cubic centimeters of capacity from each of its twelve cylinders.  It is unknown if the car was featured in the television broadcast. - Thanks to Eric Minassian for the headsup!

Alex Lifeson Featured In Guitar World, April 2013 Issue

The all new (April) issue of Guitar World magazine is now on sale, and includes an interview with Alex Lifeson where he talks about Rush's upcoming Hall of Fame induction and the new, deluxe reissue of 2112.  In the interview, he also discusses possible rarities from the vault to be played on future tours:
"I've often wanted to bring back 'The Twilight Zone,' because it's such a quirky little song. It would be really cool to attack it again with sort of our new way of approaching our older material."
So we've got that tease to look forward to!  Check out the full article here. - Thanks to John with Cygnus-X1.net for sharing the transcript!

Alex Lifeson Introduces His Signature Lerxst® Omega Guitar Amplifier

Mojotone and Alex Lifeson are releasing an exact replica of the custom amplifier used in his guitar rig. Dubbed the Lerxst Omega, the amp will be available to the public immediately:
The Lerxst® Omega amplifier was created by Mojotone based on a vintage Marshall amp Lifeson used in the studio while recording the band's latest album, "Clockwork Angels." With select modifications made to the circuitry and an overwhelming attention to aesthetic detail, this 25/50 watt amp is a marvel in the world of modern sound amplification. And for a guitarist like Alex, who has one of the most distinctive and recognizable tones in rock music, the Lerxst has to live up to a high level of expectation.
"It sounds so good!" stated Lifeson, moments after receiving the very first build of his new signature amp. "We pulled the Marshall last night after A/B-ing the two. The tonal character is quite similar, but the response of the Lerxst® has greater immediacy, sustain and grip."
Mojotone--in direct partnership with Alex Lifeson--will produce the all hand-wired Lerxst® Omega amp ($2,995) and matching Celestion G-12M loaded Tall 4x12 speaker cabinet ($1550). The amp and cabinet will be available via the lerxstamps.com website immediately.

Geddy And Alex to appear on Nights With Alice Cooper Tonight

Rush singer Geddy Lee expecting big year for Blue Jays

The USA Today posted a new interview with Geddy Lee where he discussed baseball, both past and present, including his outlook on this year's Blue Jays:
"This year might be a different story," he said. "I think my fantasy fanaticism may have to take a back seat to my home team.

"Jose Reyes is going to be very exciting to see in a Blue Jay uniform. I think he may be the most intriguing player that they acquired in the offseason – not to take anything away from Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle, Melky Cabrera and even R.A. Dickey. Jose Reyes, because he's coming off what I guess was viewed as a bit of a soft year, and because he's had such dominant years in the past, I think it'll be very interesting to see how he adapts to the American League.

"I think [Reyes'] season could dictate the kind of season the Blue Jays have this year," Lee said. "But even if he's average, the team has now acquired so much depth that I think they can withstand a softer year from him than many people expect, particularly because of the depth in the starting rotation. You're talking about a team whose ace last year is now their fifth starter. That is a total rebuild. That is a shocking rebuild, with Dickey, Johnson, Buehrle and Brandon Morrow – who I'm a big believer in."

Lee also expects a resurgent season from Toronto's young third baseman, Brett Lawrie.

"Lawrie came off a tremendous triple-A season in Las Vegas when they called him up, and that carried over into the Major Leagues," he said. "Last year, I guess some people were disappointed that it didn't continue. But that's typical growing pains. There are very few kids who can just come up from the minors and take off – very few Miggy Cabreras out there. They're few and far between. Most of them have to work at it, and they need a couple of years. Certainly in that lineup now, he's going to have a chance to do some damage."

The David Barrett Trio, produced by Alex Lifeson - Now Available

Two years in the making, the new eponymous album by the David Barrett Trio, produced by Alex Lifeson, Richard Chycki, and Alan Parsons, will be released tomorrow. Click to here to order.

The David Barrett Trio released three Alex Lifeson produced tracks on iTunes back in 2011: "Hollowbody", the trio's first single, was released March 15th; "Sonar" was released on May 24th, and "Disappearance", was released July 19th.  Check out this pre-production session developing the ending for Great Eastern Sun, the last track on the album posted by the DBT this past January (click here for part 1; part 2).

In "The David Barrett Trio Rocks Out, With a Little Help From Rush's Alex Lifeson" posted to Rockethub.com on September 27, 2011, David talked about the project and his relationship with Alex Lifeson:
"In Jan. 2010, Alex listened to my latest acoustic album The Dead Arm and had some constructive criticism, but also offered to produce with the idea that I'd benefit from such an experience. Alex really insisted I use a band because he felt the music would develop more fully that way. I'm truly inspired because I'm working with a great rhythm section as a power trio, and my favorite guitar player is producing. I have Alex to thank not only for the production team, but also for renewing my interest in loud electric guitar, which is what I do best.

"I met Alex Lifeson's son Justin back in the early 1990's when I was recording with Mark Holmes at Jeff Healey's studio in Toronto. Justin's a great guy and an old Platinum Blonde fan, so he knew Mark from back in the day and dropped by the studio one evening to say hi. We became friends, and I got to know Alex sometime later. Over the years Alex has helped me out with gear, recording projects, and we've even jammed in his basement a couple times. The engineer on this project is Rich Chycki, and coincidentally, Rich was the house engineer at the Healey studio on all the sessions I did with Amanda Marshall and Mark Holmes. Rich also produced my first solo guitar record in 1995 called, Staring Into The Sun. I recommended Rich to Alex, ten years before he actually became Rush's main recording and mixing engineer!"

Bubba's Book Club Issue 17

Neil Peart has updated his website with Issue 17 of Bubba's Book Club.  As the subtitle of the issue reads, it's "praising 21 titles, mostly novels, and all by living authors."
"My list of the past year’s literary favorites now numbers twenty-one titles, nearly all of them novels. In addition, I notice with surprise and delight that every single one is by a living author, all but one published within the last decade. That says a great deal about my feelings toward the state of modern fiction."

Howard Ungerleider Featured in PLSN, February issue

The February issue of Projection, Lights & Staging News has a feature interview with Rush's lighting designer, Howard Ungerleider.  Howard explains how the design came about, his initial thoughts on first hearing Clockwork Angels, and the hiring of the various eclectic companies that put it all together.
"...with the album called Clockwork Angels and the theme of some of the songs, I knew where it was going. I wanted to design a system with angel sort of wings; there’s actually 22 moving parts to it because there’s a dozen other little mini-trusses that come down on high string motors...The band members are true professionals, and what’s also great is they all have a great sense of humor. Just look at the humorous videos they create and show just before they hit the stage. They are made up as characters with pot bellies, funny wigs and all. Even when we’re not on tour and we go over to Alex’s (Lifeson) house for a party, he comes out as a character, so yeah, great bunch of guys, very level-headed. The freedom that they give me with my lighting is very important and allows me to give them my best. I’ve done other acts where you’re micro-managed to the point where you can’t really be creative, which is not a good thing. When I use video, it’s to bring you closer to the artist while not taking away from seeing the band on stage at the same time. It gives you a little bit of insight with the robotic cameras that we’re using now — you can get right in on top of Neil Peart playing the drums, for instance. I’m using the perspective of the fan from the audience — I want to see different angles, viewpoints. I want to do lighting choreography, not only to the music, but also to the lyrics that trigger those cues. Half the show is run manually, which is a great experience!" For the full interview visit PLSN.com. - Thanks to Greg Nosek for the headsup!

Yes' Chris Squire On Rush's Rock Hall Of Fame Induction

On Monday Rollingstone.com posted a new interview with Yes' Chris Squire where he was asked:
Q: Rush are getting inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Are you at all miffed they got it before you?

A: [Laughs] No, I can't object to that. Logistically, it's probably difficult for whoever the committee is to bring in Yes. Rush is fairly simple. It's the same three guys and always has been. They deserve to be there, no doubt about that. But there still seems to be a certain bias towards early-Seventies prog rock bands like Yes and King Crimson.

In a new interview with Sound&Vision magazine, Rich Chycki talks about mixing 2112 in 5.1 surround sound.
"I felt very proud of the 5.1 mixes when Alex called me, bubbling over about how it sounded like the original album yet “so much more.” He was so excited. It really was that moment, when one of the three people who would know this project better than anyone gave his blessing, that I felt this had turned into something very special."

Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins to induct Rush into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

From today's Cleveland.com:

Foo Fighters and self-professed Rush super-fans Dave Grohl and Taylor Hawkins will induct the Canadian prog-rockers into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in April in Los Angeles.

"It's got to be a dream come true for them. The Foo Fighters would have grown up listening to Rush on '70s radio," said Rock and Roll Hall of Fame President and CEO Greg Harris by phone from Washington, D.C. "You can tell that they have a real sense of rock 'n' roll history. You don't get the staying power they've had without it."

Cleveland's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum announced the first group of artists that would be inducting this year's class in a press release Tuesday night.

In addition to Grohl and Hawkins, Christina Aguilera and Jennifer Hudson will perform in honor of Donna Summer, Don Henley will induct Randy Newman, and John Mayer and Gary Clark Jr. will perform in honor of Albert King, with Mayer giving the induction speech.

The inductors for Public Enemy, Heart and Ahmet Ertegun Award lifetime achievement award winners Quincy Jones and Lou Adler will be announced later.

"The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame -- and rock 'n' roll itself -- is at its best when we connect the past with the present," Harris said. "In Gary Clark Jr., Mayer and Albert King, we've got three generations of great artists. And it's the same thing with Christina, Hudson and Donna Summer."

This year's induction ceremony will be at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles on Thursday, April 18. The ceremony will be recorded and broadcast on HBO on Saturday, May 18. Tickets to the ceremony go on sale to the general public on Friday, Feb. 1.

Alex Lifeson Tour of Guitar Rig, From September 1977!

A rare video of Alex Lifeson giving a tour of his guitar rig backstage at the Paramount Theater in Portland, Oregon, in September 1977 has recently surfaced (the video is misdated as 1975).  Rush played three consecutive nights in a row at the Paramount with UFO and Max Webster. The hair might have changed, but the voice hasn't!

Alex Lifeson "Hentor Sportscaster" replicas from Freddy's Frets

Custom guitar shop "Freddy's Frets" has received permission from Alex Lifeson to create and sell replicas of his Hentor Sportscaster, a customized Fender Strat which Alex named after Peter Henderson, co-producer of Grace Under Pressure.  A portion of the proceeds will go to the Grapes Under Pressure charity:
"Hello my fellow Rush fans! Alex Lifeson has given me permission to backwards engineer and meticulously blueprint his iconic Hentor Sportscaster so that I may make and sell accurate replicas. I have had the Hentor in my possession for about 6 months and have documented every property and detail of this amazing and unique sounding guitar. Alex's only stipulation was that for every guitar sold, a portion of the profit goes to his charity "Grapes Under Pressure". While in my possession over the last few months I made suggestions to Alex on upgrading the guitar. The Hentor now sports Dimarzio FS-1 single coils and I also fabricated a huge brass sustain block for the Floyd Rose, the biggest one I've seen and yet there is still a good amount of movement available. These two upgrades as well as others are listed in my OPTIONS category." - Freddy Gabrsek, FreddysFrets.com (Thanks to RushIsABand for the headsup!)

MixOnline - "All Access: Rush"

On Tuesday, MixOnline published "All Access: Rush", a behind the scenes look at the Clockwork Angels tour, with front of house engineer Brad Maddix, monitor engineer Brent Carpenter, guitar tech Scott Appleton, bass tech John Skully McIntosh, and keyboard tech Tony Geranios.
